Think Game of Thrones meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer with a drizzle of E。L。 James - Telegraph

Perfect for fans of Jessica Jones and True Blood, this is a blockbuster modern fantasy set in a divided world where one woman must uncover the truth to seek her revenge。

Half-Fae, half-human Bryce Quinlan loves her life。 Every night is a party and Bryce is going to savour all the pleasures Lunathion - also known as Crescent City - has to offer。 But then a brutal murder shakes the very foundations of the city, and brings Bryce's world crashing down。
Two years later, Bryce still haunts the city's most notorious nightclubs - but seeking only oblivion now。 Then the murderer attacks again。 And when an infamous Fallen angel, Hunt Athalar, is assigned to watch her every footstep, Bryce knows she can't forget any longer。
As Bryce and Hunt fight to unravel the mystery, and their own dark pasts, the threads they tug ripple through the underbelly of the city, across warring continents, and down to the deepest levels of Hel, where things that have been sleeping for millennia are beginning to stir 。。。
With unforgettable characters and page-turning suspense, this richly inventive new fantasy series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Sarah J。 Maas delves into the heartache of loss, the price of freedom - and the power of love。

I think that this is Sarah's best book yet。 As an avid fan, I picked this book up the day it was released and then the pandemic hit。 I couldn't dig into something new, so I actually went back and re-read a lot of my favorite books。The main characters are really wonderful。 They are relateable, have really great growth stories and the plot is so great。 The world she built by the end of the story was really in-depth, complicated in the best way and realistic in a lot of aspects。 The one criticism I I think that this is Sarah's best book yet。 As an avid fan, I picked this book up the day it was released and then the pandemic hit。 I couldn't dig into something new, so I actually went back and re-read a lot of my favorite books。The main characters are really wonderful。 They are relateable, have really great growth stories and the plot is so great。 The world she built by the end of the story was really in-depth, complicated in the best way and realistic in a lot of aspects。 The one criticism I have for this book is that it immeadiately dumps you into a new world with not a lot of world building。 By the end, I could visualize, but in the begining I had to look up descriptions/fan art to get a visual of certain creatures and characters。All in all, I cannot wait for this series! I do believe it will be her best。 。。。more

When I heard I was going to cry my eyes out I thought people were overreacting 。。I cried so much my eyes sting and my head hurtsEvery time I thought “thank god a break” I kept balling my eyes out I’m such a dumb asshole as Bryce would say, I should have waited for the sequel to come out before reading this。。

So the first half of the book was difficult for me to get through as the world was introduced and it felt like nothing was really happening。 It took me a while but it paid off。 After that initial slump I couldn't put it down as things started moving in the plot and the story was picking up。 Now I'm so happy I finished this book and can't wait for the next one。 Keep reading if you start to get bored。 It will be worth it。 So the first half of the book was difficult for me to get through as the world was introduced and it felt like nothing was really happening。 It took me a while but it paid off。 After that initial slump I couldn't put it down as things started moving in the plot and the story was picking up。 Now I'm so happy I finished this book and can't wait for the next one。 Keep reading if you start to get bored。 It will be worth it。 。。。more

The Good:I read these 800 pages in a couple days and was occupied。 If a not-great book keeps me reading, I haven't been calling it a waste of time since my reading enthusiasm plummeted last year。 Some of the plot developments and characters in this one were fun。 I was on my period, granted, but I did also legitimately tear up over certain partings and reunions during the climactic action, which was nice。The Meh: As many others have said, do not expect a more "adult" book than what you've already The Good:I read these 800 pages in a couple days and was occupied。 If a not-great book keeps me reading, I haven't been calling it a waste of time since my reading enthusiasm plummeted last year。 Some of the plot developments and characters in this one were fun。 I was on my period, granted, but I did also legitimately tear up over certain partings and reunions during the climactic action, which was nice。The Meh: As many others have said, do not expect a more "adult" book than what you've already seen from Maas。 The only differences between this book and those in the YA section are a disappointing increase in swear words (I did experience some "fuck" fatigue, which for me is saying something) and a devastating decrease to。。。ONE-HALF SEX SCENE?? Possibly the biggest let-down of them all as I was led to believe this book would be "sexy" and Maas has never before failed to bring the goods in a very literal fashion。 Instead it's more that Bryce and Hunt are living embodiments of the #couplegoals culture and the people who populate it-- so if that doesn't turn you on (it does nothing for me), their romance might not light much of a fire for you, either。 Obviously Maas has a strong tendency toward this across her writings on the whole, so I blame the urban setting for making it more conspicuous this time。 (view spoiler)[Read: If you start getting suspicious that Bryce is frequently taking pictures and selfies with Hunt's phone and changing her contact to things like "Bryce rocks my socks," just know that this is in fact serving the ultimate purpose of Hunt being able to experience an emotional memory montage at a critical juncture。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

This is the first time I’ve had an entire experience of reading a Sarah J。 Maas series condensed into one book。 Then again, it’s a hella long book, with very different sections - it’s interesting that people’s perception of the sections was so varied, too。But for me, the first part (intro) was kinda slow, as I waited (and waited) for the big traumatic event to occur。 Still, fun to get to know the people and world。 I know some people disliked Bryce here, but I really felt like I understood her in This is the first time I’ve had an entire experience of reading a Sarah J。 Maas series condensed into one book。 Then again, it’s a hella long book, with very different sections - it’s interesting that people’s perception of the sections was so varied, too。But for me, the first part (intro) was kinda slow, as I waited (and waited) for the big traumatic event to occur。 Still, fun to get to know the people and world。 I know some people disliked Bryce here, but I really felt like I understood her in all her youth and stupidity。The second part (the investigation) I LOVED。 I was pulled into this massive world, with all these complex relationships while we peeled back all the factors surrounding Danika’s death。 You could see it was all going to weave together into something cool, but I couldn’t guess what。 I also loved the romance, and all the small moments with Bryce and co。The third part (ACTION!!!) felt way too jarring too me after all that came before。 There were just too many dramatic reveals and events, miraculous saves, one after another, and I just emotionally disengaged from it。 It reminded me (in not positive ways) of Maas finales。 I will say all the events were built up and preshadowed, so it didn’t come out of nowhere, but。。。In the end I think the book could have suited me better if it was shorter or split into two, but I still enjoyed it a lot, and will follow the series further。 。。。more

Two horny people on a mission to solve some murdersOKAY… so wow…It took me over a month to read the first 400 pages of this book and it took me 2 days to read that last 400 pages。Crescent City is a whole new magical world, and it is amazing but also requires A LOT of world-building。 There are also A LOT of characters。 I do think we could have gotten the world-building more as we read instead of the first 200 pages being very heavy of it - because it´s not really interesting to read about though Two horny people on a mission to solve some murdersOKAY… so wow…It took me over a month to read the first 400 pages of this book and it took me 2 days to read that last 400 pages。Crescent City is a whole new magical world, and it is amazing but also requires A LOT of world-building。 There are also A LOT of characters。 I do think we could have gotten the world-building more as we read instead of the first 200 pages being very heavy of it - because it´s not really interesting to read about though it is important to fully understand the story (not to say that I understand this world, I´m still pretty confused haha)。 And I do think this book could have been about 150-200 pages shorter。This was also my first Maas book and I´m really positively surprised! There is a lot of critique of her works out there, which I can´t speak for because I haven´t read them, but the critique I have heard (like her apparently killing of her only queer characters) seems quite fair – I didn´t think Crescent City has any major problems though。The plot I was meeeh about – hence taking a month to read 400 pages - but it was really Hunt and Bryce that did it for me。 ❤️ I do like a somewhat slow-burn romance but not THIS SLOW。 And honestly with the reputation Maas has I expected to see more skin… 👀 I will say though that I fully trust Maas to write some good sexy scenes because… even if they were few and limited sexy BECAUSE OF BURNING EGGS they were good! The lack of filthiness in the bed the language made up for! There is a lot of curse words and filthy thoughts in this book – and I do like my fair share of curse words in a book but that amount of “fuck” and “alphaholes” sometimes got a biiiiit annoying。 Also what´s up with those alphaholes? Is it a way to be self-ironic for the past male characters she has written? It was funny the first couple of times but it became kinda lame towards the end。 And speaking of the alphaholes – the feminism in this book? Felt kind of performative。 Nothing wrong with it, but some conversations and sentences were just very obviously constructed so Bryce could show how independent and strong she is。I do absolutely LOVE the magical world。 It has every magical creature in it your heart could dream of and even more you never thought about! It is the perfect mix between modern and magical and it just makes for some hilarious scenes where you have just been slaying villains and then go home to have a beer while you watch “Fangs and Bangs”The ending did get a little too “I am the chosen one of absolutely everything” for me – but I still liked it and even though I said to myself for the first 400 pages that I wouldn´t continue with this series I have to now。 If only for more Hunt and Bryce。 Actually, they are the only reason why I have to continue。 I don´t really care about the rest。The last half was a 5-star read for me。 I got obsessed, but the first 400 pages didn´t catch my interest sooo。。。 4-stars it is。(view spoiler)[I also quite liked how both Hunt and Bryce actually had “soul-mates” or something the like before they met each other – and then they still found love。 That was really nice and sweet to see! I struggled a bit with how to rate this book。Did it start off slow? Yes。 Did it have cringe-worthy descriptions? Many。 Are many of the themes and characters repeats of other Sarah J。 Maas books? Here are my thoughts on Crescent City #1:NEGATIVES:I feel like in the first 100 pages, I received the amount of information that I would have gotten in 300 pages。 The world-building at first was very overwhelming。 I didn't like the huge breaks during the scenes where we'd get huge info dumps。 Really, I should call them info DROWNS because it was a lot。 Usually, in SJM books, we get information through dialogue, which I feel is easier to understand。 This book was a drastic change in terms of worl Here are my thoughts on Crescent City #1:NEGATIVES:I feel like in the first 100 pages, I received the amount of information that I would have gotten in 300 pages。 The world-building at first was very overwhelming。 I didn't like the huge breaks during the scenes where we'd get huge info dumps。 Really, I should call them info DROWNS because it was a lot。 Usually, in SJM books, we get information through dialogue, which I feel is easier to understand。 This book was a drastic change in terms of world-building。 My friend (thanks Meg) sent me a tiktok that breaks down the world in simpler terms and after that, I understood a lot better。 This book definitely went in waves in terms of pacing。 When the plot was climaxing, IT CLIMAXED。 But when it was the inbetween bits, I found myself losing focus and having to put the book down at times, which is why it took me 4 days to complete this book。 POSITIVES:When there was action, I was absolutely hooked。 Whether it was moments between Bryce and Hunt, fighting demons, or big revelations, I physically could not put the book down during those moments。 I'm gonna have to pick Bryce as my favorite MC of SJM。 She was FAR more relatable than Feyre and certainly Aelin ever were。 I think the urban-fantasy setting definitely helped with that。 Bryce's grief and self loathing were very realistic, minus the fantasy elements that enhanced her trauma。 I always favor "god-like" characters in stories, (EX。 The Bone Carver from ACOTAR, Luc from the Invisible Life of Addie LaRue) so when we were introduced to Aidas, my little mythology heart was quaking。 Lehabah was adorable and I love me a good pet sidekick like Syrinx。 Towards the middle of the book, I gravitated towards a lot of the characters。 I thought Ruhn was going to be a repeat of Aedion, and thank god he wasn't。 I was pleasantly surprised。 I also liked how SJM。 became very self-aware of her "alphahole males"。I thought that Hunt was going to be a Cassian 2。0 as well。 But aside from SJM's overuse of growling, purring, and dominance, I really enjoyed the little moments behind Hunt's character。 I hope in the next book he develops。 Of course, it's an SJM book, so all of her female MC's are going to end up being the most fantastic, strong, beautiful, and most powerful beings alive。 But since we spent so much time with Bryce and learning her humanly struggles, the reveal of her *special powers* really didn't bother me as much as Aelin's reveal did。 Overall, I really enjoyed this book。 I stayed up until 3 am last night charging through the last 20% of the book because it was really captivating。 I'd give this 4。5 stars only because it took be a lot longer than usual to attach myself to the world。 P。S。 Thank u Meg for finally motivating me to read this book after it sat on my shelf for 6 months <3 。。。more

I would like to start this review by saying that this was a chunky book。 I mean 800 pages for the first book in a series is something I have never encountered before in my personal library。 I have the first book in a series is something I have never encountered before in my personal library。 I have been tracking this book since it was first announced over two years ago。 Unfortunately, since I exclusively read physical books I had to wait for the paperback version to be printed, as they’re my preference。 Since the initial release I had heard a lot of talk surrounding this book and I was honestly a bit baffled at the general public's opinion。 On one hand I had people giving it average ratings which was a bit disheartening。 But on the other hand there was a lot of praise for this book, most I can assume from fans of previous Sarah J Maas series, which is a category I fall into。 Due to this divide I went into this book completely open to maybe loving this book or finding it。。。okay。For the purpose of making my review more clear I will have to split it up in two。 The first part being the first half of the book and the last part being obviously the second half of the book。 The first 100 pages I was not surprised at it being basically an information dump。 This is a high fantasy series with countless species, some more common and others completely new to me。 This meant that to get a good base knowledge, to be able to truly dive into this world, a slow explanation of the world setup and ranks was needed。 I have to be clear in saying it wasn’t done badly。 I was very intrigued at this world and even though the plot at the start seemed a little slow I was still excited to continue。 This may not work for others I can understand。 Past, younger me probably would’ve put this book down, never to be picked up again, during the first few chapters so I will inform anyone I recommend that this is the case, in the future。 From the start I was completely engrossed by the different characters and how each one differed from the other。 I absolutely LOVED the main character, Bryce, her strength was empowering and her sassiness relatable to me。 Although some might take it as me being obnoxious, I saw myself in Bryce’s character and at parts was so shocked at how similar we are。 This in turn led me to already love this book。 Apart from just her character I was surprised at how many relationships she had whether it be her closest friend, her other two friends, her brother, her parents, her biological father, her boss or… Hunt Athalar。 All these explored relationships are what made me so impressed with this storyline。 It was realistic and developed and very intense at times。 However, at around 400 pages I started questioning Maas’ decisions。 It seemed the story was always flip flopping around and she didn’t even have an idea of where this was going, let alone me as a reader。My previous doubts or complaints that had left me thinking this book would be a 4 star read got quickly booted when the peak of the story started。 It was a sudden change in pace that snowballed quickly until it plunged us into the heart of the plot。 I have got to admit that this book was highly dramatic and sometimes very predictable。 The book readers that look for realistic plots and more old fashioned adult fantasy novels will probably not enjoy this turn。 However, I live for drama so this was exactly what I was looking for and I can look past predictability if at the end of the day I enjoy the reading experience。 Also me being a cancer had me ugly crying at several points in this storyline。 I would like to mention the main thing I was surprised about。 Having read, and loved, ACOTAR in the past I was shocked to find out that this book was not romance heavy。 It focused a lot on love but not just romantic love but love that can come from family or friends。 I have to admit, somewhat shamefully, that I find it hard to truly love a book when there is no sex involved between a pair or it is purely a platonic union。 This book was the longest (literally 700 pages) slow burn I have ever read but even though this book didn’t have what I wanted it didn't discredit the characters relationship which for me was impressive and at least Maas gave us a little taste。 To be completely honest I wasn’t left satisfied but I know that this is only the start of a series that I am sure will have what I was missing in the coming books。All in all I loved this book and it will definitely stick with me for a long long time。 I am very curious as to how the rest of the series will go as I have many questions left unanswered。 If you’re looking for a new fantasy series with themes of family, love and self worth I would definitely think about picking this up。 。。。more

Honestly, this was a disappointment。 I expected more, maybe because of the hype that surrounds, but enjoyable nevertheless。This is a far cry from Sarah J Maas' usual books。 The pace was very slow over first of the book。 There's barely much happening while the situation reverses in the next half。 The last part of the book seemed to fast paced to making it difficult to keep up with the storyline。 The plotline too haphazardly weaved together, as if in a hurry to finish。 Honestly, this was a disappointment。 I expected more, maybe because of the hype that surrounds, but enjoyable nevertheless。This is a far cry from Sarah J Maas' usual books。 The pace was very slow over first of the book。 There's barely much happening while the situation reverses in the next half。 The last part of the book seemed to fast paced to making it difficult to keep up with the storyline。 The plotline too haphazardly weaved together, as if in a hurry to finish。 。。。more

I have to admit, starting this book was a little hard for me。 Possibly because I was coming off a diffrent series。 But nonetheless, I was hooked quickly。 The mix of fantasy, crime, thriller, action, with a smattering of slow burn。 I just loved it all。 Some aspects I guessed, while others threw me for a loop。 It kept me on my toes & by midway through, I was flying through the pages。 Eagerly awaiting the next instalment!

I put this book down three times and really struggled to pick it back up each time。 While lots of things happen, I didn’t feel engaged until around page 600。 The ending was great, although parts of it seemed convenient and a lot of it was predictable。 However, it is Sarah J。 Maas, and I usually enjoy her second books much more, so I’ll probably read on。
